Dr Peter Friis has been a Sports Medicine practitioner since the mid 1980's.

Sports Medicine involves the holistic health care of the active individual. Consultations often involve medical issues and how sport may be affected by this or how exercise can be used as a therapy for that condition.

Beyond this very broad description, Dr Friis also does SCUBA Medicals for recreational divers, CAMS medicals, and pre-participation medicals for those ready to embark on exercise again after a lay off period.

He has a great understanding of the health and wellbeing of young adolescents after being the medical officer for Brisbane Boys Grammar School for 20 years, and from his personal experiences in sport he is well aware of the medical problems associated with both training and competing.

Peter Friis has had a long association with various sporting groups.

He served his Sports Medicine apprenticeship as doctor for Brothers Rugby Leagues club before becoming the first doctor appointed to the Brisbane Broncos in 1987. He has been the team doctor for the club since the inception and was awarded Gold Membership for 20 years service and experience in 2008.

Dr Friis has also been the medical officer for a number of professional sporting teams and bodies, including Queensland Cricket, the Brisbane Bullets, Queensland Water Polo, the Brisbane Dance Injuries Clinic and numerous Queensland Academy of Sports groups.

He has participated in a number of Triathlons and this is why he is personally familiar with the medical problems that can come from training and competing.

Dr Friis has worked at the Brisbane Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Clinic (BOSMC) as a Sports Physician since the clinic was founded in 1989, and this brings some clear benefits to you.

The clinic relocated to its present position at the Brisbane Private Hospital in 1993. Being based in a tertiary referral hospital, BOSMC has access to state of the art radiology facilities, pathology and specialist opinions. In some cases patient have been seen, investigated, referred, admitted, and operated on without the need to leave the facility. The infrastructure of BOSMC and the intimate association with the hospital allows for fast tracking of urgent cases.

Clearly not every sport medicine problem will require hospitalization. However, x-rays can be undertaken on the same day as the consultation with Dr Friis. MRIs and CT scans can also be booked usually within 24 hours. Diagnosis, confirmation and a treatment plan can be undertaken as soon as possible to get you back to your sport.

Dr Peter Friis qualified as a medical practitioner in 1982 from the University of Queensland. He was introduced to sports medicine by Dr. Kevin Hobbs, one of the founding members of Sports Medicine in Queensland.

He undertook post graduate training and participated in teaching roles with the Australian Sports Medicine Federation. The Australian College of Sports Physicians was founded in 1986 and Dr Friis became one of the inaugural Fellows of that Association in 1991.
